Abstract

In order to closely follow the innovations and developments of the age in education and to integrate them into education, it is observed that the subjects of augmented reality and virtual reality have continued to increase in popularity recently. For this reason, the aim of the study is to examine the theses on augmented reality and virtual reality used in teaching biology subjects in Turkey in terms of various variables and to interpret the data obtained. Literature scanning method was used in this study. For this purpose, the determination of relevant studies was carried out using the national thesis center database. The scan was conducted among studies between 2010 and 2022, and key concepts such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and science education were scanned in Turkish and English. As a result of the screening, 124 studies were examined and were limited to biology subjects. After elimination, the study continued with 18 studies. These studies were examined according to their years, sample level, key concepts, sample size, research method and dependent variables. The obtained data was coded and converted into tables. As a result of the study, it was seen that the highest number of theses completed was in 2019, and when the distribution by type was examined, it was seen that master's theses were more than doctoral theses. When the key concepts were examined, it was noticed that words such as augmented reality were used the most, followed by science/biology education, academic success, virtual reality. When the sample level was examined, it was seen that the majority of studies were conducted with secondary school students. When examined in terms of sample size, it was observed that the maximum number of studies was 51-100 people.
